Disaster during Vijay's TVK rally in Karur; Death toll reaches 36, PM Modi condoles stampede tragedy
KARUR: In a disastrous incident, almost 36 people reportedly died in the rush and stampede at the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) campaign rally at Karur on Saturday. As per reports, the death toll may rise. More ministers and government officials are currently heading to Karur in the wake of the disaster. Three children and ten women are among the victims.
At one point, the actor turned politician, Vijay, had to temporarily pause his speech as he saw people fainting due to the severe rush. The actor paused his speech midway and ordered ambulances to immediately reach the location. Vijay even threw water bottles from the top of the erected stage to people after a few of them fainted on the ground.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister PM Modi condoled the death:
The unfortunate incident during a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. Wishing strength to them in this difficult time. Praying for a swift recovery to all those injured.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin is monitoring the proceedings and will visit Karur on Sunday.
In his earlier speech, Vijay said that the political landscape of the state would undergo a massive shift in the next six months. As per reports, the event has been cancelled.
