Twelve civilians killed in firing after clash in Pakistan occupied Kashmir

MUZAFFARABAD: At least 12 civilians were killed in Pakistani security forces firing on protesters in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The protests are being held over the government's failure to meet their 38 key demands. It is one of the largest protests in recent years.

The protests have been going on for the past three days. Protesters clashed with the army in Dadyal. The government has deployed thousands of troops to counter it. Apart from Muzaffarabad, the violence has also spread to Rawalakot, Neelam Valley and Kotli.

Reports said five protesters were reported to have been shot dead in Muzaffarabad, five in Dhirkot and two in Dadyal. Three policemen were reportedly killed. More than 200 people were injured. Many are in critical condition.

The protests led by the Jammu and Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (AAC) have brought life to a standstill in the region. All shops have been closed since September 29. Mobile, internet and landline services have also been completely suspended.

Protesters have been taking out marches in cities despite government security measures. They are chanting slogans like 'Beware, rulers, Kashmir is ours, we will decide its fate'. As the situation continues to deteriorate, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that the government is ready to form a dialogue committee to resolve the issues amicably. After his visit to the US, Shehbaz Sharif is holidaying in London.
