CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has rejected the pleas demanding a CBI probe in the Karur tragedy. The pleas filed by Desiya Makkal Sakthi Katchi, a BJP advocate and Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), were rejected. The court observed that the petitioners did not suffer any loss in the tragedy. The Tamil Nadu Government also opposed the CBI probe.

The court said presently the investigation in the case is progressing and that there is no need for a CBI probe. The Tamil Nadu government informed the high court that they will not allow any further meetings until it formulates standard operating procedures (SOPs) to be followed while holding public meetings.

The court also clarified that it is the responsibility of the respective political parties to provide clean water, toilets, etc. during meetings. The court also said that no party should be allowed to hold meetings near national and state highways. TVK demanded that the judicial inquiry announced by the state government into the incident was not enough and that a CBI inquiry should be conducted.
