TEL AVIV: The world is watching with hope as peace talks between Hamas and Israel begin in Egypt today, mediated by the United States and Arab nations, aiming to bring Gaza back to the path of peace. According to US President Donald Trump’s peace plan, Hamas has agreed to release hostages, while Israel has agreed to a ceasefire in return.

Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and senior diplomatic officials have arrived in Egypt to participate in the talks. Meanwhile, tomorrow marks two years since the war began- a conflict that has claimed the lives of more than 67,130 Palestinians, including many children. The war started on October 7, 2023, when Hamas fired 5,000 rockets into Israel.

Hamas militants who crossed into Israel killed over 1,000 people, burned cities, and abducted 251 individuals to Gaza. In response, Israel launched 'Operation Swords of Iron', with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowing to eliminate Hamas completely.

Hamas refuses to surrender arms Under Trump’s 20-point peace plan, Hamas has agreed only to conditions related to hostage release, ceasefire, and administrative changes in Gaza. However, it has not accepted several other terms. Hamas has refused to surrender its weapons or give up its role in Gaza’s administration. Israel, on the other hand, maintains that it will not allow the formation of an independent Palestine. Hamas insists on continuing dialogue.

2000 Palestinians will be released 1. The first stage is likely to begin soon. It includes a ceasefire, release of all hostages (including those killed), and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from certain areas in Gaza. Israel will also release about 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. 2. Future talks will cover Hamas’s disarmament and possible departure from Gaza. Trump has assured that Gaza’s civilians will not be displaced, and Israel will not occupy Gaza. The plan also includes a promise to rebuild Gaza. 3. If Hamas agrees to the terms, a Peace Board chaired by Trump will hand over Gaza’s interim administration to a Palestine Committee. 4. If Hamas rejects the deal, Trump has said Israel will be free to take any action it deems necessary.
