NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has ruled that helmets should be made mandatory for both the rider and the pillion passenger on two-wheelers. The bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and K V Viswanathan directed all state governments to strictly enforce helmet use through e-enforcement systems, including the use of cameras.

The order came while hearing a public interest petition filed by Dr. S Rajasekharan. The court also asked states to report what actions have been taken — such as collecting fines or suspending licenses — for violations. The matter will be reviewed again after seven months.

The bench further directed authorities to prevent the misuse of high-intensity LED headlights, as well as red and blue beacon lights and sirens. Any illegally sold or used beacons and sirens must be banned, seized, and fines imposed on those who use them.
