'Is my Christian identity a problem?' Congress leader Abin Varkey makes dissatisfaction public
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Abin Varkey, who was elected as the National Secretary of the Youth Congress, made his dissatisfaction public with his new role. Abin expressed his desire to continue as the Vice President of the Youth Congress and remain in Kerala. Abin said he would try to convince the party to change its decision at a time when the elections are around the corner.
Abin Varkey:
“The national leadership of the Youth Congress has made a decision. I started my public work as the constituency secretary of the Youth Congress. Later, I became the KSU unit president. I even became the vice president of the Youth Congress. I owe the most to Rahul Gandhi for whatever good that happened to me in politics. People, including me, came through the democratic election process.
I don’t know if it was my Christian identity that restricted me from the top post in the state Youth Congress. It is for the party leadership to clarify.
I got an address only because of the tag ‘Congress’ associated with me. I keep the party in deep respect, and so I will not do anything indecent to taint the party’s name. Congress is on the verge of a big battle in Kerala. It is the need of the hour for people like me to be present here. For so many years, workers, including me, have been at the forefront, carrying out protests and other activities against the Communist government and the BJP.
The coming elections are pivotal for Congress. It is for the same reason that I want to continue my work in Kerala and will request the same from the leaders. The only feeling that reverberates inside me is of Congress. I got one lakh seventy thousand votes last time, and everyone stood by me. At the same time, I also respect the party’s decision.”
