Accused in 53 cases including murder; Inmate escapes from Viyyur Central Jail

THRISSUR: Balamurugan, a thief and a notorious criminal escaped from police custody. He is an inmate of Viyyur Central Jail. He escaped by eluding the Tamil Nadu police from the premises of the Viyyur jail. The incident happened last night at around 9.45. He was being brought to the jail after collecting evidence from Tamil Nadu. The police have launched an extensive search for him.

Balamurugan is an accused in 53 cases, including murder and theft, in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. He had been lodged in the high-security jail in Viyyur since September 2023. He was handed over to the Tamil Nadu police in connection with a case. He wanted to urinate while being brought back to Viyyur. He was later brought out of the vehicle along with three policemen.

Meanwhile, Balamurugan escaped by pushing them away. He had escaped from the Viyyur jail last year also. After bringing him from Tamil Nadu after collecting evidence, he escaped after pushing the policemen. Meantime, it is also reported that the police saw Balamurugan during the search. He was seen in a housing colony at 3 am but went missing from there again.

Balamurugan is an accused in five murder cases in 33 years. Police said that he is an expert in disguise. He is a native of Tenkasi in Tamil Nadu. He lived as a gangster for many years. He came to Kerala after the police intensified the investigation in Tamil Nadu. He was caught during a robbery in Marayur. He is an accused in the case of brutally murdering a woman who testified against him.
