LUCKNOW: A scooter worth just one lakh rupees ended up receiving a fine of 21 lakh rupees. Police issued the huge fine to a young man for riding without a helmet. The youth shared the receipt on social media, and the incident quickly went viral. The incident took place in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh.

Police stopped the young man during a vehicle inspection in the New Mandi area. He was fined for riding without a helmet and for not carrying the required vehicle documents. But when he saw the fine amount on the receipt, he was shocked- it showed a penalty of Rs 20,74,000. Soon after, officials came forward with an explanation.

Police said the officer who wrote the section number and the fine amount may have accidentally written them together. Muzaffarnagar Traffic Police Superintendent Atul Chaubey said the mistake happened due to the carelessness of the sub-inspector.

Action was taken under Section 207 of the Motor Vehicles Act. But the sub-inspector forgot to write “MV Act” after the section number 207. As a result, “207” and the minimum fine amount of Rs 4,000 were written together, appearing as Rs 20,74,000. Officials clarified that the youth only needs to pay the actual fine of Rs 4,000.
