Model code of conduct should be followed
As candidates begin submitting their nomination papers for the local body elections, the state has once again moved into the heat of election season. Though discussions on seat sharing between the fronts have not fully ended, they are now in the final stage. Local body elections are different because the personal character and relationships of the candidates often influence the results. Those elected to local bodies must work closely with the people. After the election, they must forget political differences and work together. For this reason, they must engage in election campaigning calmly and responsibly. No kind of hate campaign should be encouraged.
The State Election Commission has issued the model code of conduct for the local body elections. It clearly states that political parties or candidates must not do anything that creates religious or caste-based divisions or promotes hatred between communities. It also says that candidates should not invade anyone’s privacy and should not protest in front of people’s homes. Before writing any campaign message on a house wall, permission from the house owner must be obtained.
Before elections, candidates make many promises. But people look at how much the candidate can help with development activities and their daily needs. Whether it is roads, drinking water, or other essential matters, voters focus on things that affect their daily lives. They care more about practical benefits than allegations and counter-allegations. Political parties must understand that old methods no longer work. A special feature of this election is the Green Protocol. According to this, only eco-friendly and recyclable materials can be used for campaigning and election activities. There are also restrictions on loudspeakers. They cannot be used between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Unlike during the COVID period, this time there will be no option for infected people to vote from home. Voters must come to the polling booth to cast their vote. At the same time, as per the High Court’s instructions, seating arrangements will be provided so people do not have to stand in long queues. Voting is the duty of every responsible citizen. The State Election Commission has arranged all necessary facilities to ensure safe and fair voting. All political parties and the public must cooperate to ensure smooth elections. This is also an opportunity for everyone to take part in the development and progress of our state.
