S P Deepak, K Sreekumar and Vanchiyoor Babu win local body polls; win of ‘mayoral candidates’, a relief for CPM

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Even after facing an unexpected setback in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation which has been in power for ages, the win of noted figures has come as a relief to the CPM. The three prominent candidates highlighted as mayoral candidates if retained power in the corporation this time, have won. S P Deepak won in Pettah, Vanchiyoor Babu in Vanchiyoor ward and former mayor K Sreekumar in Chakkai.

The name of Deepak is in the top as the mayoral candidate if power is obtained. Deepak defeated Congress' D Anil Kumar by a majority of 432 votes. In Vanchiyoor, Vanchiyoor P Babu, who resigned from the post of CPM Palayam area secretary and entered the contest, defeated G Girish Kumar by a majority of 329 votes. In 2015, Vanchiyoor Babu won the same ward. Last time, his daughter Gayathri Babu won from here.

Former Mayor K Sreekumar won from Chakkai ward with a huge majority. K Sreekumar won by 1623 votes. K Sreekumar had contested from Karikakkam ward in 2020 while he was the sitting mayor but suffered an unexpected defeat. K Sreekumar entered the contest after vacating the post of Vanchiyoor Area Secretary.
