‘Demanded money for mayoral post’; outbursts in Thrissur Congress, Lali James lashes out for being overlooked
THRISSUR: Some outbursts were witnessed in the congress party in Thrissur soon after the mayoral candidate was announced. All started after Dr Niji Justin was announced as the mayor. Lali James, who was the party's first choice as the mayoral candidate, stepped forward levelling allegations. She alleged that she was denied the mayor's post for money. She also refused to accept the party whip for the mayoral election being held today. 'I don't know how it was sabotaged. I was summoned to the DCC office three days ago. You know that the party needs funds to function,' said DCC President Joseph Tajet. I said I don't have any money. I replied that I have not used all this public work to make money. I was summoned again. T N Prathapan, Vincent and Tajet were there then. They asked if I would accept for two or three terms. I didn’t know the reason for sidelining me. Only the first year is enough. I said, give the remaining four years to someone. That's all I demanded. They said that it won't work and would consider me for two or three terms. I said, if Niji Justin is accepted, give the second phase to Sudhi Babu and remove me. I don't have a penny to give. I doubt that someone who was ready to give party funds or other things has been chosen. Outsiders had said that a couple were going with money. I have doubts now. Niji Justin was not seen in party's activities,' said Lali. She also clarified that if action is taken against her, she will reveal everything. Meantime, the DCC has rejected all the allegations of Lali. Niji said the party will reply to Lali. Meanwhile, efforts have started under the leadership of senior leaders to pacify Lali.
