New charioteers for Thiruvananthapuram corporation
The Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation has new charioteers. The BJP taking over the administration of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation for the first time, ending three decades of CPM rule, should be considered a turning point in the political history of Kerala. The new mayor V.V. Rajesh and deputy mayor Asha Nath will lead the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation for the next five years. Rajesh, who has been the face of the BJP in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation for years, is a person who knows the needs and grievances of the city better than anyone else. Rajesh was an active presence in the last two councils in which the BJP established a foothold in Thiruvananthapuram with 35 seats.
Only a mayor who can ensure the teamwork of all fronts and councillors in overseeing the Corporation can successfully carry out the administration. For this, intransigence in some areas and compromises in others will be required. Rajesh's experience of more than a quarter of a century in the political field can be considered an asset in this regard. The city residents will have high expectations as the ruling party of India is at the helm of the Corporation. Since there are many new projects expected to come up, the new leaders should give priority to tireless efforts to make the most important ones a reality. This is a phase where all the development possibilities have come together to grow Thiruvananthapuram into a city that will make a special mark on the world map in the coming years.
The full-scale operation of the Vizhinjam port, the BrahMos centre and the expected income from the shipyard are all poised to be a huge game-changer for the city. There are going to be times when a large number of foreigners are likely to come for business and other purposes. The most annoying thing for foreign visitors in any country is the garbage heaps, traffic jams and poor road conditions. Other local bodies in Kerala are facing the same problems that Thiruvananthapuram is facing in terms of waste management. It will be the biggest achievement if the BJP-led administration can turn Thiruvananthapuram into a model city like Indore in India in solving the garbage problem in the next five years.
The recent election results have proven that those who think that waste disposal can be made possible by fining people will end up in a fool's paradise after the elections. Similarly, if the medical centres under the Municipal Corporation are further upgraded with the increased cooperation of retired doctors and other health workers, a situation can be created where the majority of the city residents do not have to approach government and private hospitals except for serious illnesses. People are expecting an action plan from the new administration for many things including parking facilities, new parks, and measures to create a permanent solution to waterlogging. There are similar problems in other Corporations, municipalities and panchayats in Kerala. It is hoped that the new leaders will be able to resolve all this with timely professionalism.
