Malappuram district should be divided; demand should not be viewed through lens of religion, says Kanthapuram A P faction
MALAPPURAM: The Kanthapuram AP faction has demanded the division of Malappuram district. The demand was raised through a statement when the Kerala Yathra led by Kanthapuram A P Aboobacker Musliyar reached Malappuram. The statement was read out by Kerala Muslim Jamaat State General Secretary Sayyid Ibrahimul Khaleel Al Bukhari Thangal, the vice captain of the Kerala Yathra. Thangal said that district division should not be viewed through a religious lens but as a demand of the people of Malappuram.
Thangal explained that dividing a district is meant to improve revenue and administrative facilities and does not violate the federal system. He added that it is a wrong practice to view district reorganisation through the lens of religion. According to him, a reorganisation should be done after carefully studying the population and geographical conditions of all districts in Kerala. He stressed that the issue should be seen as a genuine demand of Malappuram residents.
The Kerala Yathra led by A P Aboobacker Musliyar began on January 1. The journey is being held from Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram with the aim of discussing issues among Muslim communities in Kerala.
