ALAPPUZHA: Patients and their companions visiting medical colleges will no longer have to search for accommodation. Under the government's Ashwas Rental House Scheme, accommodation for about 500 people will soon be ready in the premises of three medical colleges in the state. The scheme is being implemented through the State Housing Board. The Ashwas Rental House Scheme is being implemented in Kannur, Kottayam, Alappuzha and medical colleges after the success of the pilot scheme launched in Thrissur.

The multi-storey buildings will be opened to the public as soon as the final touches and fire safety inspections are completed. Patients who present medical documents can avail the accommodation at a meagre rent determined by the medical college hospital authorities. Light meals will also be provided in the buildings through Kudumbashree. The decision is to open the buildings before the assembly elections.

Relief for the common people

On an area of about half an acre in the medical college premises, bed facilities are being set up in multi-storey buildings to accommodate up to 100 people at a time. In addition to the bath-attached rooms, a dormitory and a tower room with bed facilities have been set up. It will be very helpful for patients and relatives coming from far-off districts for treatment.
