NEW DELHI: When the country announced Padma Awards, Kerala is proud for the Padma Shri being awarded to M S Devaki Amma of Alappuzha. The award is given in recognition of her unparalleled contributions to environmental conservation. President Draupadi Murmu will present the award on Republic Day. Devaki Amma, who planted her own forest in a village called Muthukulam in Alappuzha, is a personality who has shown the world the importance of nature conservation.

Devaki Amma started planting plants in her home area while she was on rest following an accident. Later, this turned into an activity that curved areas spread over acres into forests. Born into a family with a tradition of agriculture, Devaki Amma has given great importance to forests, living creatures and their conservation in her life. The 'Muthukulam Forest', which has been noticed even at the international level, is today the habitat of many rare plants and birds.

Devaki Amma's achievement is a reflection of the changes brought in the Padma Awards after the Narendra Modi government came to power. Devaki Amma was included in the 'Unsung Heroes' category, which was introduced to honor those who perform silent service outside the world of fame. Devaki Amma is among the first 45 people in the list announced this time. Devaki Amma has received many recognitions, including the central government's 'Vanamitra' award for environmental protection.
