Alcaraz era begins
MELBOURNE: Spanish prodigy and world number one Carlos Alcaraz defeated Serbian tennis legend Novak Djokovic to lift his first Australian Open title. Alcaraz won the historic three-set victory in a thrilling final. Score: 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5.
With the Australian Open title, the 22-year-old Alcaraz also became the youngest player to win the career slam (win all Grand Slam titles).
Alcaraz won after a close fight against the 38-year-old Djokovic. The match became emblematic of a baton change in the sport with Alcaraz showing signs of walking to greatness, on the likes of Roddick, Nadal, Agassi, Federer and Djokovic.
This is Alcaraz’s seventh Grand Slam title and his maiden Australian Open title. The Spanish wonder boy had won the French Open (2024,25), Wimbledon (2023,24) and US Open (2022,25) Grand Slam titles twice each.
