KASARGOD: The police have started an investigation in the incident of a woman ending her life due to mental distress following allegations of theft of gold from her friend's house. The dead is Jaseela (24) of Nalthadukka in Kasaragod. Jaseela attempted suicide after sharing a video saying that she was innocent. Jaseela consumed rat poison last Sunday. She was immediately admitted to a private hospital in Kasaragod but died while undergoing treatment.

The Adhur police were investigating a complaint over the loss of 9.5 sovereigns of gold from Jaseela's friend's house. As part of the investigation, Jaseela was summoned to the station and the police had even searched her house. However, the police did not get any clues to prove Jaseela's involvement in the theft.

In the video shot by Jaseela before taking the drastic step, she said, ‘They said that I stole the gold which went missing from my friend’s house. However, I haven’t taken it. They are saying that I went to Kozhikode with a youth and took a room there. No one has peace in my house. If I die, those responsible for this should be punished. How can I return the gold that I have not taken? Why embarrassing me like this?' the woman says in the video.

The woman alleged that the police were not willing to accept her complaint to prove her innocence. Her mother revealed that her friend's relatives had come to the house and threatened Jaseela. The family said that no one was ready to believe her even after she swore on Quran and that she was in severe mental distress after her husband's family also accused her. Jaseela's family has filed a complaint with the Vidyanagar police station and the Kasaragod SP in the incident.

The police clarified that no FIR had been registered yet, although a complaint was received on the missing gold. Jaseela was questioned as part of the preliminary investigation. She was released due to lack of evidence. The police have informed that a detailed investigation into the loss of the gold and the circumstances leading to her death are continuing.
