Protests erupt again in Kashmir, schools and colleges closed; posters of Trump and Netanyahu burned
NEW DELHI: Protests continued across Jammu and Kashmir even on Wednesday over the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. PDP president and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti burned posters of US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. Security has been tightened in Srinagar as well. Schools in the Valley will remain closed till March 7. There are restrictions on internet connectivity, including in areas where the Shia community is concentrated.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Police registered a case against some media houses and individuals for allegedly spreading fake news. The Facebook and Instagram accounts of newspapers like 'Kashmir Life', 'Greater Kashmir' and 'Rising Kashmir' have been blocked by Meta. 'Kashmir Life' said the ban was at the behest of the central government.
Jammu and Kashmir Police registered a case against National Conference leader and MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi and former Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu for allegedly trying to cause unrest in the society. The police accused both of encouraging protests through their social media accounts. Agha Syed Ruhullah has responded by saying that his Facebook account has been frozen, and the security allotted to him reduced.
