Rahul Gandhi announces five major poll guarantees for Kerala; promises ₹3,000 pension and free bus travel for women

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has announced five major poll promises for Kerala. He was speaking at the valedictory session of the 'Puthuyuga Yatra' at Putharikandam Ground in Thiruvananthapuram.

These promises, titled 'Indira Guarantees', aim to alleviate financial distress and boost entrepreneurship. Additionally, he announced a new health insurance scheme named after former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.

Key Promises and Guarantees

  • Free Travel and Financial Aid for Women: The Congress-led alliance promises free travel for women in KSRTC buses. To encourage higher education, female college students will receive a monthly financial aid of ₹1,000.
  • Hike in Welfare Pensions: Social welfare pensions will be increased to ₹3,000. This move aims to ensure financial security for the marginalised sections of society.
  • ₹25 Lakh Health Insurance: The 'Oommen Chandy Health Insurance Scheme' will provide every family with medical coverage up to ₹25 lakh. The goal is to provide quality healthcare without financial burden.
  • Interest-Free Loans for Youth: To promote entrepreneurship and job creation, young entrepreneurs will be eligible for interest-free loans up to ₹5 lakh.
  • Special Department for Senior Citizens: A dedicated government department will be established for the welfare and protection of senior citizens. This department will focus on ensuring the dignity and care of the elderly.
