Third time’s the charm? Thalapathy Vijay ready to cooperate with CBI again in Karur Stampede Case
CHENNAI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has issued a fresh notice to Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader and actor Vijay. He has been directed to appear for questioning tomorrow, March 10, 2026, at the agency's headquarters in New Delhi.
This marks the third time the actor-turned-politician has been summoned. The investigation pertains to the tragic stampede that occurred during his political rally in Karur on September 27, 2025.
Key Investigation Details
- Casualties: The disaster claimed 41 lives and left over 60 people injured.
- Previous Interrogations: Vijay was earlier questioned by the CBI on January 12 and 19.
- New Evidence: Sources indicate that investigators have gathered additional material and statements that require fresh clarification from the TVK chief.
- Focus of Probe: The inquiry is currently scrutinising crowd control failures, event planning, and a reported 7-hour delay in the program that may have exacerbated the overcrowding.
Judicial Oversight
The case was transferred to the CBI from a State-led Special Investigation Team (SIT) following an order by the Supreme Court. The apex court emphasised the need for an impartial probe to restore public trust.
To ensure transparency, the investigation is being monitored by a Special Monitoring Committee. This panel is headed by former Supreme Court Judge Justice Ajay Rastogi.
Political Context
The summons arrives at a critical juncture for the TVK leader. His party is scheduled to begin candidate interviews for the upcoming Assembly elections tomorrow, the same day as the CBI appearance.
During previous sessions, Vijay reportedly stated that inadequate police deployment contributed to the tragedy. The CBI is expected to record his final statement regarding organisational lapses and adherence to safety protocols during this round.
