S-400, sophisticated drones and more: Central govt approves massive Rs 2.38 lakh crore defence deal
NEW DELHI: The central government approved huge projects worth Rs 2.38 lakh crore to modernise the Indian Armed Forces and enhance its defence capabilities. The historic decision was taken by the Defence Acquisition Council, chaired by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The approval has been given mainly for the purchase of Russia's state-of-the-art S-400 air defence system, new fighter jets, and sophisticated drones for surveillance and attack.
India will acquire more S-400 missile squadrons to further strengthen its existing air defence shield. This system will be capable of destroying enemy aircraft and missiles from a distance. New medium transport aircraft have also been approved to increase the strength of the Air Force. These will be part of the force to replace ageing aircraft.
The stock of drones, which are crucial in modern warfare, will also be increased. This will help in the surveillance of borders and launching attacks in emergencies. As part of the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' project, most of these projects will be implemented by Indian companies. The government has approved projects worth Rs 6.73 lakh crore in the defence sector this financial year alone. This move is expected to make a big difference in the country's security arrangements in the face of tensions on the borders. These new arms deals will likely have a major impact on upgrading India's military might.
