Summer showers to hit Kerala: IMD warns of sudden thundershowers and high temperatures
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Central Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an immediate weather warning for Kerala, predicting moderate rain accompanied by thundershowers and gusty winds over the coming hours.
Immediate district alerts
Residents in Kollam, Pathanamthitta, and Idukki districts should prepare for localised weather disturbances within the next three hours. The IMD expects:
- Thundershowers at isolated places.
- Strong winds reaching speeds of up to 40 kmph.
Thunderstorm warning
Looking ahead, the Meteorological Department has confirmed a three-day window of unstable weather. A Thunderstorm Alert is active from April 9 to April 11, 2026. During this period, isolated thundershowers with lightning are likely across the state.
"Heat vs. Rain" Dual Alert
Despite the incoming rain, a Yellow Alert for high temperatures remains in effect for today and tomorrow.
- Maximum Temperatures: Expected to hit 38°C in Palakkad and 37°C in Kollam, Kottayam, and Pathanamthitta.
- Precaution: The combination of extreme heat and high humidity increases the risk of lightning-heavy "summer showers."
Safety Reminder: The IMD advises the public to move indoors at the first sign of lightning. Avoid standing under trees or in open fields, and disconnect electrical appliances to prevent damage from power surges.
