VIRUDHUNAGAR: In one of the deadliest industrial accidents in recent months, a massive explosion ripped through a licensed firecracker manufacturing unit in Kattanarpatti village near Virudhunagar on Sunday afternoon, leaving at least 23 workers dead and several others critically injured.

The blast occurred at the Vanaja Fireworks unit around mid-day while approximately 30 workers were engaged in routine manufacturing activities. The impact was so severe that the tremors were felt within a 10-kilometer radius, leading to the immediate collapse of at least six manufacturing rooms.

Fire and Rescue Services from Sivakasi, Sattur, and Virudhunagar rushed to the scene. Emergency responders faced a grueling task as intermittent explosions of remnant chemicals and unfinished goods continued for hours, hindering initial rescue efforts.

Officials have confirmed 23 fatalities, though the toll is expected to rise as several of the six hospitalized workers have sustained 100% burn injuries. The unit was largely reduced to rubble, with concrete debris scattered across a wide area. Forensic teams are working to identify the victims, as several bodies were recovered in a severely charred state.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed deep sorrow over the incident and has directed immediate relief measures. "The news of the loss of several lives in the firecracker factory explosion in Kattanarpatti causes immense sorrow. My deepest condolences to the grieving families," the Chief Minister stated. Ministers K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran and Thangam Thennarasu have been dispatched to the site to oversee rescue operations and ensure the injured receive the best possible medical care. The state government is expected to announce an ex-gratia payment for the families of the deceased shortly.

This tragedy comes just six days after another explosion at a unit near Sattur on April 13, which claimed one life and left others injured. Virudhunagar district, the hub of India’s ₹6,000-crore firecracker industry, has seen a spike in accidents recently. The district administration has ordered a high-level inquiry to determine if the Vanaja Fireworks unit had violated safety norms or exceeded its permitted storage capacity.
