India’s health crisis: Over 50% of population now gripped by lifestyle diseases

NEW DELHI: A survey report by the National Statistical Office (NSO) indicates that over 50% of India's population now suffers from lifestyle diseases. Conditions such as hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, and thyroid disorders are the most prevalent. This marks a sharp rise from 31% in 2017-18. The survey was conducted last year across 1.4 lakh households. Notably, women are more affected by these ailments than men.
Key Findings:
- Heart Disease: 25.6% of participants reported cardiovascular issues, up from 16.7% in 2017-18.
- Endocrine & Hormonal Disorders: 24.2% of the population suffers from diabetes, thyroid issues, or PCOS.
- Age Factor: These diseases are most prevalent in those aged 45 and above (24.2%, compared to 15% in 2017-18).
- Declining Infections: Conversely, the prevalence of infectious diseases like fever, jaundice, and diarrhoea dropped to 15% in 2025 from 32% in 2017-18.
- Pediatric Health: Infections remain the primary health concern for children under 14.
Health Insurance & Demographics: Government health insurance coverage has seen a massive boost over the last decade. Rural coverage rose to 47% (from 14%) and urban coverage to 44% (from 19%). Seniors are the most vulnerable, with 43.9% of those over 60 suffering from ailments, compared to 27.7% in 2017-18.
