"Pooram of all Poorams" dawns: Thrissur under strict vigil

THRISSUR: The "Mother of All Poorams" awakens today. The festivities officially commence as Kanimangalam Sastha makes his grand entry through the Southern Gopuram—the gate ceremoniously opened yesterday by Naithalakkavu Bhagavathy.

While the spirit of Pooram remains high, the shadow of the recent Mundathikode fireworks tragedy looms large. Consequently, this year’s celebrations are under an unprecedented security blanket. The two main rivals, Thiruvambady and Paramekkavu, have completed their final preparations, ready to face off in a display of rhythmic and visual grandeur.

Schedule of Splendor

  • Morning Rituals: Following Kanimangalam Sastha, other constituents of the Pooram will arrive to pay obeisance to Lord Vadakkunnathan.
  • Thiruvambady’s Procession: The deity will begin her journey around 7:30 AM, arriving at the 'Madhom' for rituals before the world-famous Madathil Varavu begins at 11:30 AM.
  • Paramekkavu’s Grandeur: Their procession starts around 11:00 AM. Accompanied by the thunderous Chempada Melam, they will enter the Vadakkunnathan temple premises.
  • The Rhythmic Peak: Once at the Ilanjithara, the legendary Kizhakoot Aniyan Marar will lead the Ilanjithara Melam, a percussion ensemble that defines the Pooram experience.

Somber change to Kudamattom

In a significant departure from tradition due to safety concerns, the iconic Kudamattom (the competitive exchange of colorful parasols) will be restricted to just 15 minutes this year.

The night pooram will continue through the dark hours, culminating Monday morning with the Pakal Pooram (Day Pooram). The festival will conclude with the emotional 'Upacharam Chollal' (the farewell ceremony), where the deities bid adieu until next year.
