KOCHI: The easing of entry permit rules for visiting Lakshadweep has sparked excitement among tourists. Soon after the announcement, travel agencies approved by the Lakshadweep administration reported a sharp rise in enquiries.

Earlier, visitors were required to have sponsorship from a resident of Lakshadweep and obtain police clearance from their hometown. These requirements have now been removed. However, obtaining a permit remains mandatory, and an online system has been introduced to make the process easier.

The tourist season in Lakshadweep runs from September 15 to May 15, with the period from November to May being the most suitable for travel. There are daily flights to the islands from Kochi, Bengaluru, and Goa. Visitors can also travel by ship. Tourists have to pay a heritage fee of Rs 200 per day, in addition to accommodation and food expenses. Limited accommodation facilities remain a major challenge.

Previous conditions: Visitors needed an invitation (sponsorship) from a resident of the islands and a character certificate from their local police station. After getting the permit, tickets could be booked based on availability. Travel agencies used to arrange sponsors for those booking tour packages.

New conditions: Visitors must apply for a permit at least 14 days in advance. The application should include details such as the islands to be visited and the time of arrival. Entry is allowed only to the islands mentioned in the permit. There are 27 travel agencies approved by the Lakshadweep administration across the country, including nine in Kochi.
