Increase in Covid cases with unidentified sources, situation worsening in Thiruvananthapuram, says Mayor

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With four more persons contracting COVID-19 from unidentified sources in Thiruvananthapuram city on Thursday, Mayor K Sreekumar announced that severe restrictions will be imposed in the city to contain the virus spread. While stating that the situation in the capital city is worsening, he added that the Saphalyam complex will be shut down for seven days as an employee at a shop in the complex tested positive on Thursday. Meanwhile, strict restrictions will be imposed in the Palayam market which is next to the Saphalyam complex. Only the front gate of the market will be opened in the next 7 days. Authorities will ensure that people will be allowed into the market only in case of any emergency, he added.

Restrictions will be imposed in other markets as well, the mayor said. He also added that the authorities are considering to declare Vanchiyoor and Kunnumpuram regions as containment zones after a lottery seller tested positive. While adding that there is no need to lock down the entire city, he stated that restrictions will be intensified in offices, supermarkets, and bus stops in order to avoid crowding.
