KOCHI: The CPI has expressed support for Aisha Sultana, who has been charged with sedition for her remarks against the Lakshadweep administrator. CPI Ernakulam district secretary P Raju said that legal aid would be provided to Aisha if necessary. The party has also set up a 15-member panel of lawyers to provide free legal aid to Lakshadweep citizens charged in this manner.

P Raju informed that they are trying to contact Sultana and if they are ready they will take up the case. A case has been registered against her for calling Lakshadweep administrator Praful Khoda Patel a 'biological weapon' during a channel discussion.

The case was registered by the Kavaratti police following a complaint lodged by Lakshadweep BJP president Abdul Khader Haji. The case has been registered under sections 124A and 153B. Following this, leaders of the BJP unit in Lakshadweep left the party en masse in protest of the move. Twelve people, including senior leaders, have resigned from the party.
