Why should Tamil Nadu be divided?

It is rumoured that the Central Government is making moves to divide Tamil Nadu into two and make one part of it a Union Territory. The threat posed by such rumours in a peaceful state is not small. Is this happening without the knowledge that there are people in Tamil Nadu who react emotionally to any subject?

It is not known if any administrative or regional issues are forcing Tamil Nadu to be divided into two. Indications are that the move is motivated by purely political motives. The former ruling party AIADMK has the highest influence in the north-eastern districts of Tamil Nadu. The BJP also has some influence there. It is heard that this may be the political motive of those behind the partition plan. But enabling division overcoming many hurdles is not an easy task. It is not certain at what level the anger and protest against such an idea would flare up

Protests erupted from the moment the reorganization was announced. Protests over such issues can lead to major riots and vandalism. It is imperative that those responsible for this come forward immediately to clarify the central position on the issue. Those preparing for the riots are waiting for an opportunity. Many will seize the opportunity and make selfish gains by making people’s life miserable.

The plan is to form a new state called 'Konkunad', which will include Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode, Namakkal, Salem, Dharmapuri, Nilgiris, Karur and Krishnagiri districts, as well as other adjoining districts. The change is intended to create 90 assembly constituencies; 30 constituencies will created from adjoining districts.

Extraordinary geography, severe administrative inconveniences, stagnant development, linguistic differences and backwardness are the main reasons for demand for state’s partition. But neither of these reasons is heard to be behind the Tamil Nadu partition move. Moreover, most of these are rich districts. Not to mention the local imbalance. There is no distinction in language either. It is noteworthy that the people have not come forward with the demand for partition.

The ideal thing is not to take a mere problem-creating approach in a state where peace prevails on all levels. If you have such a goal, you should come together only after thinking many times. There are already many problems in the country that are disturbing the atmosphere of peace. So it is better not to add one more..
