KOCHI: The High Court said that mental and physical abuse towards married ladies are increasing day by day in our country to pressurize them to bring more wealth to the family of the bridegroom to improve their financial situation. Justice V Shircy said that despite several cases filed against the husband and family in such incident, the attitude of the community has not changed.

The single bench said this while rejecting the anticipatory bail pleas of Dr Sijo Rajan, brother Rijo Rajan, parents C Rajan and Vasantha, both residents of Kannamkuzhi RV Sadanam in Vattapara in Thiruvananthapuram, in the case of beating up wife and wife's family demanding more dowry.

"The court said the allegations were serious and that granting anticipatory bail to such people would send a wrong message to society. Despite the strict law, the incidence of violence against women in matrimonial homes is on the rise. Matrimonial homes are becoming a dangerous place where women cannot live. This should be stopped forever", the High Court said.
