CHANDIGARH: Senior Congress leader Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa has been elected as the new Chief Minister of Punjab. Randhawa's name was decided at a meeting of the Congress Legislative Party. Bharat Bhushan and Karuna Chaudhary were also elected as Deputy Chief Ministers. Captain Amarinder Singh had resigned as chief minister on Saturday following party disputes.

Randhawa was the Minister for Prisons and Co-operation in the Amarinder cabinet. A member of the traditional Congress family, he acted as Sidhu's spokesperson in the Amarinder-Sidhu dispute. Randhawa turned against the Chief Minister on the grounds that Amarinder Singh had failed to keep his election promises made in 2017.
