THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The post of guard, who was known as the dictator of running trains, will now be called manager. The order regarding the redesignation of posts was issued on January 13. The other day it reached all the zonal and divisional offices as the revision of designation circular. However, the Railways has stated that there will be no change in their pay scale.

The post was renamed the Train Manager following a complaint that the name guard only referred to security guards. The Railway Board gave the green light to the name change after discussions and explanations with the railway employees' service organizations.

Railway Guard

The British created the ranks of the Railway Guard, with white robes and hats as uniform. They stood at the back of trains with green and red flags and whistles in their hands. Guards were an all-powerful position at a time when traffic controls were becoming manual. But with the automation of signal systems, the guards became a figurative post. The image of a train guard was used on postage stamps issued in 2003 to mark the 150th anniversary of Indian Railways.
