KOCHI: Uma Thomas, an old KSU activist, who fell in love with P T Thomas 35 years ago, has become the new star of Kerala politics. While Uma Thomas wins in Thrikkakkara, the memories of popular leader P T Thomas is shining.

Uma did her undergraduate and graduate studies at Maharaja's College, Ernakulam from 1980-85. In 1982, she won as the woman representative in the KSU panel. She became the vice chairperson in 1984.

During the time, KSU state president P T Thomas, who was supposed to speak at the college KSU meeting, arrived late. In order to keep the audience engaged, Uma sang a song. Later, P T came in hearing her song. That acquaintance soon blossomed into love. However, their family did not accept the relation between a Brahmin family member from Ravipuram and a Christian from Idukki. Uma demanded P T to come home and take her with him. Finally, on 9 July 1987, P T Thomas went to Uma’s house in Ravipuram, took her with him and the couple got married.

Uma did not continue politics and public works. It was a time when P T did not have any income. Uma supported her husband and concentrated on the family affairs. After P T death, it was on Congress leaders’ request that she decided to contest in the by-election.
