THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Central government has decided not to consider detailed project report of Nemom Coaching Terminal, for which Rs 116 crore was allotted in 2011 Railway budget. The Centre informed that the terminal is being built in Kochuveli and there is no need to provide facilities in Nemom.

The completion of the double track from Ernakulam to Kayamkulam via Kottayam and the upgradation of the signal service as part of the Vande Bharat service would have paved the way for more trains to the state. More services require larger and more convenient stations.

The railway has 14.5 hectares of land in Nemom and had said that they require 7.8 hectares more for the terminal. Kerala demanded Rs 142.5 crore for the project. Since then there had been no progress about the project. But now during a question raised by John Brittas MP in Rajya Sabha it was informed the project has been abandoned.

Nemom coaching terminal was the idea of former Railways minister of state O Rajagopal. The proposal was made in 2008.
