Reshuffle in police force: K Padmakumar to become second in top brass

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Following the reshuffle in the police force, IPS officer K Padmakumar will arrive in the state capital as the second in the top brass of Kerala police. On Monday, Padmakumar will take charge as the Additional DGP of the police headquarters under the DGP. Padmakumar will now handle all the administrative work for the DGP. Padmakumar will be donning the khaki after a gap of seven years.

Padmakumar, who will get the rank of DGP next year, will become the senior DGP of the state when Anil Kant's tenure ends on June 30, 2023. He can continue till April 2025 if he becomes police chief. Padmakumar, a 1989 batch IPS officer, had been kept away from important posts for the past few years.

He excelled in all the duties assigned to him like Transport Commissioner, Battalion Chief, Coastal Police and Police Academy. He was the chairman of the committee set up by the High Court to examine the type of language in the Malayalam movie 'Churuli'. The High Court, which upheld Padmakumar's finding that there was no violation of law in the film, also approved the report which stated that artistic freedom is part of the freedom of expression.

K Padmakumar has experience of working in all sections of the police. He also proved capable in police administration. He has held various posts such as SP, DIG, Thiruvananthapuram City Police Commissioner, Kozhikode Commissioner, SP in all districts of Malabar, Ernakulam Range DIG, Crime Branch- Intelligence IG, Ernakulam- Thiruvananthapuram Range IG, South Zone ADGP, Transport Commissioner, Director of Police Academy, Chief of Coastal Police and Battalion Chief.
