Second case of monkeypox in Kerala; Disease confirmed on expat from Dubai

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: One more person has been confirmed of monkeypox in the state. The 31-year-old youth, a native of Kannur, is undergoing treatment at Pariyaram Medical College. He reached the state on July 13 from Dubai.

Health Minister Veena George said that his health condition is satisfactory and people who came in close contact with him are under isolation. His samples were sent to the virology lab in Pune on Saturday.

The first case of monkey pox in the country was confirmed in Kerala. The youth, a native of Kollam, is undergoing treatment at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. He reached the state from UAE.

As he showed symptoms on the day he reached the state, he first sought treatment from a nearby private hospital. He was then referred to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. He came in close contact with his father, mother, taxi and auto drivers.

Meantime, his condition is satisfactory. Those who came in close contact are under surveillance. None are showing any symptoms. Monkeypox has the same symptoms of chicken pox.
