‘Great accomplishment’; PM Modi congratulates Neeraj Chopra for scripting history at World Athletics Championship

OREGON: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Neeraj Chopra, who scripted history for India, by winning silver medal in the men’s javelin throw event at the World Athletics Championship.

Taking to Twitter, Modi wrote, “A great accomplishment by one of most distinguished athletes. Congratulations to Neeraj Chopra on winning a historic Silver medal at the World Championships. This is a special moment for Indian sports. Best wishes to Neeraj for his upcoming endeavours.”

Neeraj Chopra, who threw a distance of 88.13 meters in the final, has become first Indian to win a silver medal in the history of the World Athletics Championships. He is also the first male athlete to win a medal at the World Championships. He scripted history at his fourth attempt in the finals.

It is India’s second medal at the World Championships after the one bagged by Malayalee athlete Anju Bobby George. She had won the bronze medal in long jump at the 2003 World Athletics Championship in Paris.

Neeraj Chopra is also the first Indian athlete to win a medal in track and field in the Olympic history. He had scripted history in golden letters by winning a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics with a throw of 87.58 metres.
