Heavy rain likely in state on Thursday, orange alert in seven districts, holiday for educational institutions

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: There is a possibility of heavy rain in the state today. Southern and central districts will receive more rainfall. Orange alert is declared in seven districts-Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki and Thrissur. The other seven districts are on yellow alert.

The Meteorological Center has informed that there is a possibility of thunder and lightning. Officials have warned fishermen not to go into the sea. Fishing in Kerala-Karnataka-Lakshadweep coasts has been banned till September 3.

The rains are due to a cyclonic circulation over Tamil Nadu and adjoining areas and a low pressure area extending over Tamil Nadu to Madhya Pradesh. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has informed that there is a possibility of widespread rain in Kerala for the next five days.

Yellow alert is in effect on Friday in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Malappuram and Kozhikode districts and on Saturday in Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Palakkad and Malappuram districts.

Holiday for educational institutions

The collector has declared a holiday for educational institutes operating as relief camps in Pathanamthitta.
