First British Queen to open up about atrocities during English rule; monarch's eventful visits to India

Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne of Britain in 1957. She passed away on September 8 at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

Queen Elizabeth visited India in 1961, 1983 and 1997. During her visits, she always praised India's richness and diversity.

Queen and her husband Prince Philip visited India in 1952 and visited Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and the world wonder Taj Mahal. She also visited Rajghat in Delhi and paid respects to Mahatma Gandhi.

She visited India on the invitation of President Rajendra Prasad on Republic Day and addressed the people. Thousands attended the ceremony held at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi. The queen was wearing a fur coat and hat at the event.

Mother Teresa was awarded an 'Honorary Order of Merit' by the Queen when she visited India during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in 1983. Queen Elizabeth's last visit to India was on the 50th anniversary of India's independence. For the first time, a Queen spoke about the atrocities of British colonial rule and incidents like Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
