Avalanche in Uttarakhand, 10 trainee mountaineers trapped at peak dies, rescue operation continues for others

DEHRADUN: Ten people died in a heavy avalanche at Draupadi Danda peak in Uttarakhand. The deceased were trainees of the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) in Uttarkashi. Earlier, reports came out that 29 people were trapped on the peak due to the avalanche. Following this, the principal of the institute has confirmed that ten trainees were killed. Two of the deceased are women. Eight trainees were rescued by the group members themselves. Search and rescue operations are underway.

The rescue operations are being carried out by National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, ITBP and Army. Moreover, as per the instructions of the Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, the Air Force personnel are also at the forefront of the rescue operation. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh expressed their condolences in the incident.
