Environmentalist Dr. A Achuthan passed away

KOZHIKODE: Famous environmentalist and former state president of Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad Dr. A Achuthan passed away. He was 91. He was admitted to the Kozhikode Cooperative hospital following a heart attack four days ago. He was affected by Pneumonia too. His end came at 12.50 in the afternoon.

In his will he has written that there should not be any public funeral, rituals or placing of wreaths on his body. Therefore, his body was transferred to the hospital mortuary. Respecting his wish, his body will be handed to the Kozhikode Medical College today morning.

He got his Post Graduation in Civil Engineering from Wisconsin University and his Ph.D from Madras IIT. He served in the PWD and also served as professor at the Thrissur and Thiruvananthapuram Engineering colleges and also at the Regional Engineering College in Kozhikode.

Dr. Achuthan was the Dean at Calicut University, and Director of Academic Staff College. He also member of expert committees of UGC, Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad, Kerala State Planning Board etc.

He also served as member of the Endosulfan Inquiry Commission and Plachimada Public Inquiry Commission. He also participated in the Silent Valley conservation activities.

Dr. Achuthan was the editor of magazines such as ‘Shasthra Gathi’ and ‘Orae Oru Bhoomi’. He has published 10 books and written more than 100 articles.

He is survived by his wife Sulochana and three children.
