KOLLAM: A floating solar plant which is capable to produce 50 MW electricity will come up at West Kallada grama panchayat in partnership with 400 land owners. The plant will come up at 276 acres of paddy that have turned into a water clogged area.

This land has been given to National Hydro Electric Power Corporation for 25 years lease. The expense of the project is Rs.700 crores.

It is for the first time in the state that a floating solar plant is coming up under the leadership of a local body and with partnership of the people.

The contract to build the plant is given to Tata Consultancy. The KSEB will buy the electricity that is produced by plant. The project got delayed because of the differences in the charges between KSEB and the power corporation. The corporation demanded Rs.3.18 for one unit, while KSEB said they cannot give more than Rs.2.45.

After the Electricity Minister attended the meeting and came to an understanding regarding the charges, the officials of KSEB and the corporation came to a final agreement.
