Breast cancer can be detected early with ‘sports bra’ developed by Malabar Cancer Center

KANNUR: A medical gadget to detect the deadly breast cancer beforehand that is cheap and simple will be available in the market next year. The ‘sports bra’, patented in the US is developed in collaboration with Thalassery Malabar Cancer Center C-MAT.

The bra is manufactured by Indo-Japan joint venture Murat Machinery India Private Limited. This company was chose from a list of companies that approached the Cancer Center for the manufacture and distribution of the product.

The sports bra is simple to use and the community health workers can screen it at home. It was designed by the team headed by Malabar Cancer Center director, Dr. Satheeshan Balasubramaniyan. Breast cancer has now become the most common type of cancers across the population. If it is detected earlier the survival rate is high. The expense and time for medical treatment can be brought down if the cancer is detected earlier.

It will be provided to ASHA workers and other volunteer health workers. Sensors will control its activity. The sports bra works on the principle that the metabolism of highly active cancer cells can be detected by a simple gadget.
