KOCHI: The decision to appoint only Malayala Brahmins as Melshanthi at Sabarimala and Mallikapuram is discriminatory and not compatible with a modern society and is casteism. This was argued in the HC today.

It was also argued that this discrimination is in violation of the constitution. The discriminatory based on the notion that others do not have the purity to perform pooja must be stopped.

The divison bench heard the plea in a special sitting of those whose applications were rejected for the post just because they were not Malayala Brahmins.

The Melshanthi must not be appointed on the basis of birth. The lawyer of the complainants said that these practices will blur the fame and popularity of the temple.
