Uniform Civil Code Bill introduced amid opposition protests; Muslim League publicly expresses displeasure over absence of Congress MPs during introduction of bill

NEW DELHI: A private member bill to implement the Uniform Civil Code was introduced in the Rajya Sabha amid dramatic developments. The controversial bill was introduced amid protests by opposition parties. Meanwhile, the Muslim League criticized that Congress leaders were not present in the House when BJP MP Kirodi Lal Meena introduced the bill.

League MP PV Abdul Wahab expressed his displeasure by pointing out that none of the Congress leaders was present when the bill was introduced in the Rajya Sabha. He also said that the Congress leaders were not there when the list of those opposing the bill was read out. Congress MPs were absent even when the opposition parties protested against the bill. Also, many Congress MPs abstained from voting on the bill.

Although motions were placed to oppose the Bill, they were defeated through votes by 63-23. The discussion on the bill will take place later.
