Chris Gayle’s 14-year dynasty overthrown: Suryavanshi’s 12-six blitz rewrites IPL history
NEW CHANDIGARH: India’s teenage batting sensation, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, continues his fairy-tale run in the Indian Premier League (IPL) by shattering a long-standing tournament record previously held by T20 legend Chris Gayle.
During a high-stakes Eliminator clash against Hyderabad, the 15-year-old prodigy produced a breathtaking masterclass in power-hitting, blazing his way to a 29-ball 97. Suryavanshi's spectacular innings was studded with 12 towering sixes, a knock that officially crowned him as the batsman with the most sixes in a single IPL season.
Suryavanshi achieved this historic milestone in his 15th appearance of the season, eclipsing the 'Universe Boss' Chris Gayle’s 2012 record, where the West Indian icon had cleared the ropes 59 times in 14 matches. The young left-hander has drawn widespread praise for his fearless approach against elite bowling attacks, having consistently dominated world-class pacers including Jasprit Bumrah, Josh Hazlewood, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Pat Cummins throughout the tournament.
Most Sixes in a Single IPL Season:
- Vaibhav Suryavanshi (2026) – 60+ Sixes (15 matches)*
- Chris Gayle (2012) – 59 Sixes (14 matches)
- Andre Russell (2019) – 52 Sixes (13 matches)
- Chris Gayle (2013) – 51 Sixes (16 matches)
- Jos Buttler (2022) – 45 Sixes (17 matches)
With this feat, Suryavanshi now sits at the apex of an elite power-hitting club. Former Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder Andre Russell occupies the third spot with 52 sixes from the 2019 season. Gayle features again in the fourth position with 51 sixes from 2013, followed closely by former England captain Jos Buttler, who smashed 45 sixes for Rajasthan Royals during his blockbuster 2022 campaign.
Suryavanshi’s record-breaking exploit not only cements his status as the find of the season but also propels his team forward in the business end of the tournament.
