MUSCAT: What was meant to be a joyous family celebration turned into tragedy for a family from Taliparamba, Kannur, following the untimely demise of a former expatriate just days before his son's wedding in Oman.

Mahmood, who had returned to Kerala in 2022 after concluding a long career abroad, had recently arrived in Muscat alongside his wife, Rahmath, and daughters, Mehra and Majida. The family travelled to attend the wedding of his son, Mazin Mahmood, a manager at a perfume boutique in Qurum.

The wedding was originally scheduled to take place on Friday in Al Khuwair. However, shortly after arriving in Oman, Mahmood—who had been undergoing treatment for chronic kidney disease in India—suffered a severe health setback and was rushed to the hospital.

As Mahmood’s condition began rapidly deteriorating, the family decided to advance the schedule. In a poignant ceremony, Mazin wed Saba Muneer Moosa, a Mumbai native of Malayali descent, right by his father’s hospital bedside so Mahmood could witness the union.

Following Mahmood’s subsequent passing, all remaining wedding festivities and receptions were cancelled. He was laid to rest at the Amerat cemetery in Muscat. Mahmood is survived by his wife, Rahmath; his son, Mazin; his daughters, Mehra and Majitha; and his sons-in-law, Abdullah K.S. (Al Ain) and Mushtaq (Taliparamba).
