Sunrisers eclipse Super Kings: Ishan Kishan brightens Hyderabad’s playoff destiny

CHENNAI: Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) officially secured their spot in the IPL 2026 playoffs following a commanding five-wicket victory over the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Chasing a competitive target of 181, Hyderabad timed their chase beautifully, crossing the finish line in 19 overs with five wickets down. With this crucial victory, SRH joins Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans as the teams to have guaranteed a playoff berth this season.

Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan was the architect of Hyderabad's triumph, anchoring the innings with a brilliant, match-winning half-century.

Chase: Kishan and Klaasen deconstruct CSK's defense

SRH's pursuit of 181 got off to a shaky start when explosive opener Travis Head was dismissed early for 6 off 6 balls. However, Abhishek Sharma stepped up to steady the ship alongside Ishan Kishan, contributing a brisk 26 off 21 balls in a 38-run second-wicket partnership.

The momentum decisively shifted when Heinrich Klaasen arrived at the crease. Klaasen dismantled the Chennai bowling attack with a blistering 47 off just 26 balls, putting the hosts firmly on the defensive. At the other end, Kishan paced his innings to perfection, shifting gears smoothly after a cautious start to reach his half-century.

Chennai found a brief glimmer of hope in the 18th over when Nitish Kumar Reddy was dismissed for 11. Kishan’s magnificent knock of 70 from 47 balls finally came to an end with SRH agonizingly close to the target—requiring just 6 runs from the final 9 deliveries. Unfazed by the late drama, Salil Arora (10* off 5) and Smaran Ravichandran (5* off 2) remained unbeaten to guide Hyderabad home with an entire over to spare.

First innings: Brevis and Samson drive Chennai to 180

Earlier in the evening, Chennai Super Kings recovered from mid-innings stutters to post a competitive 180 for 7 in their 20 overs.

CSK’s newly configured top order saw Sanju Samson provide a blistering start as opener, scoring a quickfire 27 off 13 balls before falling to SRH skipper Pat Cummins. Conversely, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad endured a tough outing, struggling to find timing during his 15-ball 21.

Mid-order cameos from Karthik Sharma (32 off 19 balls) and Shivam Dube (26 off 23 balls) kept the scoreboard ticking. However, it was South African young gun Dewald Brevis who top-scored for the Men in Yellow. Brevis played a fluent, aggressive knock of 44 off 27 balls, falling just six runs short of a well-deserved half-century.

Handy lower-order contributions from Urvil Patel (13) and Prashant Veer (11), alongside Akeal Hosein’s unbeaten 3*, pushed Chennai to the 180-run mark.

For Hyderabad, captain Pat Cummins led by example with a stellar three-wicket haul, while Saqib Hussain impressed with figures of 2 wickets. Praful Hinge and Ishan Malinga chipped in with one wicket apiece.
