NEW DELHI: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated a potential breakthrough in regional diplomacy, stating that Iran may soon accept a peace agreement to conclude the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Speaking to reporters in New Delhi during an official visit to India, Rubio expressed optimism regarding Tehran's response to recent peace proposals, adding that an official confirmation is anticipated in the coming days. Rubio underscored the urgency of the situation, noting that the administration is aligned with President Trump’s directive to bring a swift resolution to the conflict. However, the Secretary of State maintained a firm stance on Washington’s core security and economic demands. "Iran will not be permitted to possess nuclear weapons," Rubio asserted, reiterating the US demand for Tehran to permanently halt its uranium enrichment program. Additionally, Rubio emphasised that the United States remains resolute on ensuring the Strait of Hormuz—a critical global shipping lane—is kept open and free of arbitrary tariffs or transit taxes. While maintaining economic and strategic pressure, Rubio affirmed that the Trump administration remains committed to a negotiated settlement. He concluded by stating that diplomatic efforts are actively underway to achieve a peaceful resolution through structured dialogue.
