Milma increases milk price by Rs 4 per litre; revised price to come into effect from June 1
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Milma has increased milk prices by Rs 4 per litre. The revised price will come into effect from June 1. The decision was taken at the Milma Board of Directors meeting held today. Milma had earlier decided to increase milk prices and had appointed an expert committee to study the matter. The committee recommended a price hike of Rs 4 to Rs 6 per litre, following which the federation approved a Rs 4 increase.
Milma officials said the revised pricing structure would ensure that dairy farmers receive an additional Rs 3.35 per litre. Prices of other milk products are also expected to increase. Regional unions had been repeatedly demanding a milk price hike to support dairy farmers. However, the government had not approved the increase earlier due to the Assembly elections. Permission was later granted after Milma continued to press for a revision. At a meeting held in April, it had already been decided that the price hike would be implemented after the election results were announced.
According to the revised structure, 83.75 percent of the additional amount collected from the price hike will go to dairy farmers. Societies and dealers will each receive 6.25 percent. Milma will get 2.5 percent, while 0.75 percent will be allocated to the welfare fund. Another 0.5 percent will be used for plastic waste removal and processing activities.
